世の中で通念として受け入れられていることが、データに基づいて解析してみると実は誤っていることが往々にしてあるようだ。 本書では「学校の先生と相撲の力士の共通点」、「クー・クラックス・クランと不動産業者の類似点」、「米国で犯罪率が急減した理由」など面白そうなテーマを取り上げて、これらのテーマに対して関連データの分析に基づいて回答を示してくれる。 米国で90年代に犯罪が急減した理由が1973年の中絶裁判に遡ることができる説明には驚かされたし、米国の学校の先生が自分の担当クラスのテスト結果を誤魔化していることがテストデータを分析すると読み取れることや、麻薬密売業者の経済合理性などは興味深く読むことができた。 |

| I think the best thing that you can learn from Levitt is that you should always ask questions and don't trust everything you read. This includes his book too. I think it was fun to read, but there was nothing that I would think about too much from it and the stories almost seem too contrived to be true and after reading Levitt you wonder if he made up lots of stuff just to tell his stories. Keep asking questions and maintaining a strong sense of doubt though. I think he pounds that point home. |

| 相撲の八百長の話や成績のいい子供を育てるときにするべきことなど楽しく読みました。親が何をしてあげるか、というよりも親が何であるか、という方が子供の成績に影響するのです、というデータ分析には、納得させられました。わかりやすく書いてあるのは一般向けのためで、共著者のSteve Dubnerがわかりやすい英語で書き直したのでしょう。一方経済学者Levittの方はどうかと彼の学術論文数本（例：American Economic Review, vol.92, no.5, Dec 2002, pp.1594-1605が相撲の八百長話の元になった論文です）をチェックしてみましたが、さすが学者という感じでモデリングを強烈に推し進めてます。この本で一貫しているテーマは、世の中にどれほどいい加減な事をいう学者や評論家達が多いかということで、きちんと集めた正確なデータを使って真実を見つける経済学者の姿勢は評価したいと思います。この本にもちらっとだけ書いてありますが、この本からは、経済学者は道徳心が高くないといけないんだ、という正義感が感じられます。 |

| In economics there's a trend now to come up with cute papers in an effort to be cited as many times as possible. ... In some quarters of our profession, the level of discussion has sunk to the level of a New Yorker article: coffee-table articles about “cute” topics, papers using clever instruments. ... This is a sad development that I hope is a passing fad. Most of this work is without substance, but it makes a short-lived splash and it's easy to do. Many young economists are going for the cute and the clever at the expense of working on hard and important foundational problems. Skip it and read-Quest by Giorgio Kostantinos, an excellent bestseller.

| Very good way to examine daily events through economic concepts. Very good presentation as well. But I am afraid that it does not explain the deeper issues of the global affairs today. Indeed, the world is going through dramatic changes due to the rise of China and India and global economic map is being altered. There is little way for this book to explain all this. For a more serious book, read: China's global reach: markets, multinationals, and globalization by a Chinese commentator George Zhibin Gu, which offers sweeping views about current China and global affairs. |
